artist’s statement
I paint in response to Nature, from walking through local landscapes, and more recently, in response to plant life found in the domestic setting, in the form of still life studies.
My working process begins with emotional responses to shapes, colours and textures brought about by seasonal changes, the weather and light. In the studio, initial marks in charcoal or graphite give structure, followed by an almost unconscious, experimental process of abstracted and descriptive elements that are worked, then reworked, until a meaningful resolution is reached.
‘‘I enjoy that each painting requires a level of engagement from the viewer, but leaves enough space for personal interpretation. I’m told my work brings feelings of calm, and the chance to be still and reflect for a while.’’‘
I've been selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (2009) and The Discerning Eye Annual Exhibition (2006) at the Mall Galleries, London. More recently, The Foundry Gallery, Lewes, The Sussex Contemporary (2022), Brighton i360, and BN9 Studios, Newhaven (2025).
