artist’s statement

Based in Sussex, I paint in response to the natural world, with landscape as a starting place. My working process begins with broad, lightly sketched marks in charcoal, which develop along with the application of paint.

‘‘Each painting unfolds in its own way, perhaps resembling nature’s restless drive towards change and growth in a process of becoming, and the chance for something new to take shape.’’

Initial marks give structure, and stimulate the painting’s departure into new forms in an organic process of layering, scraping back, and scratching into the surface to reveal what lies beneath. Both abstract and descriptive elements emerge, to shift and evolve over time, in a process of discovery, until resolution is reached.

‘‘I enjoy that each painting requires a level of engagement from the viewer, but leaves enough space for personal interpretation. I’m told my work brings feelings of calm, the chance to be still and reflect a while.’’

I've been selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (2009) and The Discerning Eye Annual Exhibition (2006) at the Mall Galleries, London. More recently, Artists United (2016), The Foundry Gallery, Lewes, and The Sussex Contemporary (2022), Brighton i360.
